Curriculum Areas of Learning
Communication and Language Development
giving children opportunities to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves, and to speak and listen in a range of situations.
Physical Development
providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; developing their coordination, control, and movement, and understanding of the importance of physical activity, and healthy food choices.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; forming positive relationships and developing respect for others; developing social skills and learning how to manage their feelings; understanding appropriate behaviour in groups; and having confidence in their own abilities.
Literacy Development
encourages children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. We have a very successful phonics and early reading programme which ensures that almost all of our students are confident in reading by the end of their time at LUC. We run workshops alongside international educational providers to help our parents support their children at home.
Mathematics
provide children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understand- ing and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; describing shapes, space, and measurement. Staff at LUC are trained to use Singapore Mathematics and the UK’s excellent Numicon resource for numeracy. Our Mathematics offer a quality first teach- ing approach, designed to give children the understanding of number ideas and number relationships that are essen- tial for success in mathematics. It encourages a very hands-on approach to learning Mathematics.
Understanding the World
guiding children to make sense of their physical world through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment. Staff at LUC are trained in ICT and make use of varying tools such as Education City, Programming equipment and other tools to support teaching in this area.
Expressive Arts and Design
enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materi- als, as well as encouraging them to share their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in Art, Music, Movement, Dance, Role Play, and Design and Technology. We use specialist teachers trained in imple- menting the Klenie Musik Garten to enrich Music and Movement.
Within each of these areas, there are specific Early Learning Goals – for example, in the case of Communi- cation and language, these are Listening and attention, Understanding, and Speaking. Your child will be given an achievement level for each area of learning.
